Work Related Learning (WRL)

We put a lot of emphasis on preparing our learners for the world of work.  Learners in all year groups receive some careers education through the PSHE curriculum, with the careers strand being delivered by a Level 6 careers advisor from Y9 upwards.

In Key Stage 4, learners have discrete curriculum lessons which incorporate careers education and planning as well as having the opportunity to undertake vocational qualifications supported by vocational or work experience placements. Studying for a vocational qualification in Btec in Introductory Studies, whether the general vocational studies or a more specialised one in a particular area ensures that each learner has the opportunity to understand the wide range of opportunities within those fields, as well as preparing learner for future employment. The programmes of study offer an engaging and inspiring approach to learning and assessment. The qualifications give learners the opportunity to acquire and develop generic and transferable skills such as time management as well as sector-specific skills, in order to complete tasks and demonstrate a level of achievement.  These are also the first step on a pathway to further learning.

For those Key Stage 4 learners who see a career in construction as the pathway for them we also offer Y11 learners the opportunity to complete a BTEC Level 1 Award Health & Safety in a Construction Environment.  This qualification offers our learners with a high-quality vocational education that equips them with key skills and knowledge to support them in the world of work.

We also encourage learners to complete online qualifications which many employers require all their employees to complete as part of their statutory compliance with Health and Safety Law.  These include courses in, for example, Food Hygiene; Manual Handing; Slips, Trips & Falls; safeguarding.
